So you’re here because like many other people The Custom Keto Diet has caught your eye.

As someone who has personally tried The Custom Keto Diet and had success before, I can say for even myself I was skeptical.

Even the first week or so on this diet I thought to myself, how can I possibly lose weight when I’m eating so much fat? 

The thing is, ever since I can remember we’ve been told that “FAT” will make you fat.

The whole time growing up I always remembered my mum having low fat milk, low fat cheese, low fat yoghurt and eating the leanest meat possible. Did she lose weight? Sure. Did she crave sugar and feel unsatisfied? DEFINITELY!
So…..much to my dismay, I wanted to keep going and give it a good try. Mainly because I had done a lot of research and from what I had seen, is that it was a scientifically based diet which I will get into later in the article.
 
So a week passed being on The Custom Keto Diet and I decided to weigh myself. I could not believe what the scales were showing. I had lost weight!

I had done light exercise…..I ate only FULL fat food, I lowered my carbohydrate and my sugar intake and the results spoke for themselves.
 
So how exactly does it work? 
So for The Keto Diet to become effective you need to get yourself into a state of Nutritional Ketosis.

What Is Nutritional Ketosis?

Nutritional Ketosis is a metabolic state. It means your body is using fat as fuel instead of glucose. It literally turns your body into a fat burning machine. 

So once your carbohydrate and sugar intake is low enough.

Your body will start to produce Ketones from the stored fat in your body and now this is what will start to fuel your body.

Cutting your carbs and sugars isn’t the only dietary adjustment you need to make now. 

The other crucial part is upping your fat intake.

Increasing your fat intake will also make your progression to Nutritional Ketosis faster and a lot more stable. 

Now that fat is your primary fuel for your body, you’ll need fat to keep up your energy levels as well as your Ketone production.

So What Are The Actual Ratios I Need To Eat?

So how much do you need to reduce your carbohydrates by?

So a good amount is under about 50gms a day.

Of course the lower your carb count is, the quicker you will get into Ketosis.
 
I personally when I started, I tried to limit mine to 20gms a day for about a week or so, then I increased to 50gms a day which was a nice sweet spot for me.

Of course if you’re an active person or plan to also do an exercise regime, you can give your body a higher amount of carbohydrates and still successfully get into Nutritional Ketosis.

So the first couple of days you might experience something that is now known as “The Keto Flu”

What Is This Keto Flu?

So don’t let the term “Keto Flu’ put you off The Keto Diet.

I know what you’re thinking. ANY flu doesn’t sound good.

Honestly…it’s not as bad as it sounds. 

I personally had very minimal symptoms.

I had a slight headache for the first few days and some low energy as my body still wanted that glucose and now I can easily go in and out of Nutritional Ketosis without any symptoms at all.

Some people however do have more symptoms such as….
If you do get any of these symptoms if any, you need to remember this is only for the first couple of days to maybe a week whilst your body is adjusting to this new way of functioning and also detoxing from sugar and the high amount of carbs you’d normally eat.

But there are a few ways you can help decrease these symptoms if you do get them.

Keep Hydrating!

One way which is helpful is staying hydrated. I can not recommend this enough. Hydration is SO important, especially on The Keto Diet. You need to remember that carbohydrates store water.

So when you reduce your carb intake, you’re going to have water loss.

Which is why you may experience fatigue.

Sodium And Magnesium

Another thing that will help, is keeping your sodium levels up. Your body can lose a lot of sodium whilst doing The Keto Diet so it’s important to replace the losses. Adding some salt to your food is a good way to get your sodium in.

Also having some magnesium, whether you take a supplement or try to have some extra foods with magnesium in there. This will help with muscle soreness and also headaches.

Getting Enough Sleep

Try to get enough sleep, as lack of sleep will make your symptoms feel a lot worse than they need to be.

Everyone's sleep needs are different but make sure you are not going into sleep debt and get enough sleep.

You’re Not Eating Enough Fat?

I know this one can actually seem the hardest cause so many people struggle with the thought process into eating fat and losing weight. 

So make sure you are getting enough fat in your diet. Because without enough fat your energy levels will struggle and it will be a lot harder for your body to transition into the fat burning machine it needs to be. 

Where Do My Ketones Need To Be?

So if you’re one of those people who likes to gauge where exactly you stand on the Ketone prediction metre then there are things out there to help you do so.
 
Such as urine test strips or blood ketone monitors.

If you do choose to use blood monitors then your ketones should be around 0.5 - 1.0 for nutritional ketosis.

Optimal ketosis is around 1.0 - 3.0 which is where you will get the best weight loss results.

However I would go roughly between Nutritional and Optimal levels and was very successful.

My Final Thoughts

So in my experience I found The Keto Diet very easy and very rewarding.

I also found a slot into my life easily and was able to go out and enjoy a meal with friends by tweaking some menu items to fit within the “keto rules”.

Weight loss is only one of the great benefits to The Keto diet but if your main concern is weight loss then honestly there’s nothing left to say. 

If you follow The Keto Diet you WILL see results.
